My very existence is under attack. I\u2019ve kept a low profile, told myself the craziness sweeping the world would pass me by. Yeah, it was wishful thinking, actually an outright lie, but it\u2019s kept me sane.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>I\u2019ve been hiding out forever in one guise or another. Currently, I run a nightclub. Ascent<\/em> is an \u201cask me no questions, and I\u2019ll tell you no lies\u201d haven. For everybody. I\u2019m a Vampire. Far be it from me to judge.<\/p>\n

My closest ally is a shapeshifting dire wolf. I adopted him when he was a scrawny puppy, but I\u2019m getting ahead of my tale.<\/p>\n

The fragile d\u00e9tente between supernaturals and humans has crashed and burned. I can\u2019t avoid the truth any longer. Lucky for me, mortals don\u2019t know exactly what I am. When I moved to Seattle, some vampiric sixth sense urged me to play my cards close to my vest, but I\u2019m done burying my secrets.<\/p>\n

And my power.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m Ariana Hawke. No more skulking in the shadows for me.<\/p>\n

Warped Line<\/strong><\/p>\n

I chose stasis\u2014a long sleep\u2014for me and two of mine. Hard to time these things, but we woke in the eye of a cyclone.<\/strong><\/p>\n

When I went to sleep\u2014to avoid being drained of magic and blood by dark Sorcerers\u2014Vampires weren\u2019t exactly on the endangered species list, but not many of us are left. No one ever accepted us. Not mortals and not others with power, either. At least one of those dams has developed a few cracks. Supernaturals aren\u2019t quite welcoming, but they\u2019ll take help from any quarter.<\/p>\n

Mortals have declared war on magic, and they won\u2019t rest until we\u2019re all sitting in iron-clad prisons. What a bunch of cowards. If they weren\u2019t hiding behind false humanitarian walls, they\u2019d be honest about their intentions and do their damnedest to kill us outright.<\/p>\n

Cracked Line <\/strong><\/p>\n

Vampires don\u2019t fall in love. Except I did. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Not the best decision of my long life. I definitely cracked an unspoken line, but Ariana trounced me as far as line-crossing went. Very few acts constitute crimes in Vampire circles. Hers was the worst. I fled to the Old Country to buy myself thinking time.<\/p>\n

I still loved her, but what she\u2019d done was so vile I couldn\u2019t set it aside.<\/p>\n

The world is a very different place from when I went into stasis. I woke to wars on every side. Vampires are scarcely strangers to battle. No one\u2019s ever accepted us, but they\u2019ve mostly let us be. It\u2019s different this time. Very different. Mortals won\u2019t rest until they\u2019ve wiped out magic.<\/p>\n

Broken Line<\/strong><\/p>\n

In all my years as a Vampire, hundreds of them, I never imagined humans would be anything other than food.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rich, pure, delectable blood. Prey that fought back never posed a problem. Mortals couldn\u2019t stand against those of us with supernatural ability. That world still exists, but it\u2019s taken a backseat to humans who\u2019ve joined forces with turncoat mages. Mortals were never meant to wield power. Over the long haul, they\u2019re sure to be very sorry for the choices they\u2019ve made.<\/p>\n

Maybe someday I\u2019ll be a humble innkeeper again, but it\u2019s so far in the future I can\u2019t even think about it. Nope. For now, all I see is blood. Rivers of it, and not running down my gullet, either. On the plus side, I have good friends, powerful allies, and a Vampire who loves me.<\/p>\n

We have to come through this unscathed. Have to. I\u2019m Ariana Hawke, and I take care of what\u2019s mine.<\/p>\n

I’m basically a mountaineer at heart. I remember many hours at my desk where my body may have been stuck inside four walls, but my soul was planning yet one more trip to the backcountry.\u00a0There’s a timeless element to the mountains. They feel like old friends as I visit them, and visit them again. There’s nothing like standing on a remote pass where I’ve been before and seeing that the vista is unchanged. Or on an\u00a0equally\u00a0remote peak. Mountains are the bones of the world. They’ll prevail long after all of us are dust. It feels honest and humbling to share space with them. I hope I’m blessed with many more years to wander the local landscape. The memories are incomparable. They warm me and help me believe there will be something left for our children and their children after them.<\/span><\/p>\n
