\u00a0Shadow Reaper<\/strong><\/p>\n

The dead are restless, and a whole lot less cooperative than they have been. That was true even before I drew the short straw and ended up with Vampire duty. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Since then, Reaping has taken way more time. So much, I\u2019m worried I\u2019ll lose all the clients from the career that actually feeds me. I run a small private pilot school. It pays most of the bills and means I don\u2019t have to keep regular hours.<\/p>\n

Death wants me to remain in one piece. She\u2019s bailed me out often enough, she\u2019s all but ordered me to find other employment. I just smile and nod after our little talks, and then I climb back into a cockpit.<\/p>\n

Our last toe-to-toe didn\u2019t go so well. She went and assigned Vampires to me. That\u2019s when Reaping turned into a million-hour-a-week job. I can almost hear the Reaper who was stuck with them before, laughing his head off.<\/p>\n

I shepherd souls to the other side. Vampires have zero interest in leaving, but I have a quota to fill. Means I have to trick them, but it didn\u2019t work for long. They\u2019re onto me. Damn Death, anyway. She painted a target on my back, and now the Vamps are out for blood.<\/p>\n

In more ways than one.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>Rebel Reaper<\/strong><\/p>\n

Come fly with me. Catchy, huh? It works for airplanes. Maybe it will work for the dead once I launch my own Reaping business. Except my new tagline will be, come die with me.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Back when my life was simpler, I thought all I had to do was hold gateways for the dead to pass through. Silly me, I actually enjoyed Reaping. Almost like a drug or fine old whiskey, it made me high, filled me with delight, and left me glowing with the rightness of providing a last bit of compassion.<\/p>\n

Good little Reaper that I am, I never examined any of it too deeply, just crafted portals, exactly as Death trained me. Ha! She neglected to mention I command way more magic than she\u2019d let on in Reaper school.<\/p>\n

Death smiled pretty to my face and then lied to me. Used me.<\/p>\n

Me and all the other Reapers.<\/p>\n

I can\u2019t not Reap. It\u2019s hardwired into me. But I can tell Death I quit.<\/p>\n

Big words. I have no idea if I\u2019ve got the guts to follow through, or what Death would do about open insubordination.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve always liked to live on the wild side, though, so I guess I\u2019m about to find out.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Untamed Reaper<\/strong><\/p>\n

I did it! I\u2019m free. Well sort of. Freedom isn\u2019t as cut and dried as the word implies. In this case, I\u2019m at the top of Death\u2019s Worst Reaper Ever list. What it signifies remains to be seen.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I broke free from Death because there wasn\u2019t any other way out of Reaping Vampires. She refused to let me off the hook or consider other arrangements. I\u2019d have been content leaving it at that, but word about my choice got out. Other Reapers clamored for independence too.<\/p>\n

Death\u2019s fury expanded another notch with every defection until nowhere is far enough away for me to run to. If I was only fighting her, it might be manageable. Toss in Vampires who hate my guts, a phalanx of dark gods who want my hide, and a bunch of bigoted mortals who\u2019ve decided magic is holding them back.<\/p>\n

Pah. Humans are their own worst enemy, but they\u2019re the least of my problems.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been a rocky journey. Along the way I\u2019ve uncovered allies and even a man who loves me. Will we be enough to slam the gates and send darkness packing?<\/p>\n

We have to be.<\/p>\n

No prisoners.<\/p>\n

No choices.<\/p>\n

I’m basically a mountaineer at heart. I remember many hours at my desk where my body may have been stuck inside four walls, but my soul was planning yet one more trip to the backcountry.\u00a0There’s a timeless element to the mountains. They feel like old friends as I visit them, and visit them again. There’s nothing like standing on a remote pass where I’ve been before and seeing that the vista is unchanged. Or on an\u00a0equally\u00a0remote peak. Mountains are the bones of the world. They’ll prevail long after all of us are dust. It feels honest and humbling to share space with them. I hope I’m blessed with many more years to wander the local landscape. The memories are incomparable. They warm me and help me believe there will be something left for our children and their children after them.<\/span><\/p>\n
